We Hit 12K Subscribers — Here's What Changed
Last Tuesday I refreshed my YouTube dashboard and saw a number I'd been chasing for three months: 12,000 subscribers. I want to break down exactly what happened, because I don't think it was random.
The Spike
Between May 20 and June 5, I gained roughly 3,200 subscribers in 16 days. Before that, I was averaging maybe 80–100 new subs per week. Something changed.
Looking at the analytics, it came down to one video: "Choosing a Backend: Supabase vs Firebase vs Custom." That stream recording hit 6K views in its first week — about 4x my normal performance. It got picked up by the YouTube algorithm and started appearing in suggested videos for people searching "Supabase tutorial" and "Firebase alternative."
Why That Video Worked
I've been thinking about this a lot. Here's what I think made the difference:
1. The title was searchable. Most of my stream titles are narrative ("Building the Feed Algorithm — Part 7") which is great for existing subscribers but terrible for discovery. "Supabase vs Firebase vs Custom" is a question people actually type into search.
2. It solved a real decision. I wasn't just showing code — I was working through a genuine architectural decision in real time. Viewers could see my reasoning, not just the outcome.
3. The thumbnail had contrast. I finally stopped using the default stream thumbnail and made something with a dark background and bold text. Embarrassingly simple, but it works.
What I'm Doing Differently Now
Every stream I do now, I ask myself: "What's the searchable version of this title?" I still keep the narrative title for the live stream (it fits the build-in-public vibe), but the YouTube upload gets a more discoverable name.
I'm also starting to clip shorter segments from each stream — 8–12 minute standalone videos that answer a specific question. The first one ("Why I'm not using Firebase") already has 800 views in 3 days.
The Next Milestone
25K. That's where the YouTube Partner Program really starts to matter for revenue, and it's where I think the audience will be large enough to get meaningful beta feedback on the app.
Current trajectory puts me there in about 4 months. Let's see if we can beat that.
If you want to follow along in real time, subscribe to the newsletter — I send a build log every week with the stuff that doesn't make it into the videos.
